A town with a story to tell

Bournemouth’s journey from remote heathland to thriving financial centre is one of transformation and resilience. Here are just a few highlights from the video reel:

  • 1800: Bournemouth was a sparsely populated heathland, known more for smugglers than settlers
  • 1810: Lewis Tregonwell visited with his wife, built a house, and became the town’s founding figure
  • 1855: Bournemouth Pier began life as a wooden jetty. Today, it is an iconic landmark
  • 1870: The railway arrived, sparking rapid Victorian growth. The population surged from 16,859 in 1881 to 37,000 by 1891. As of 2021, Bournemouth is home to 196,455 residents
  • 1929: The Pavilion Theatre opened and remains a cultural hub for touring shows and pantomimes
  • 1984: Bournemouth International Centre was built, hosting world-class events and conferences
  • 1992: Bournemouth University was founded, evolving from its polytechnic roots into a respected institution

A town that works

Tourism remains a cornerstone of Bournemouth’s economy, but today it is joined by thriving finance, insurance, and digital sectors. Bournemouth Square reflects this modern energy – a place where heritage meets innovation.

  • The Russell-Cotes Museum offers a glimpse into Victorian collecting and culture
  • Royal Bournemouth Hospital, with its new BEACH Building, continues a legacy that began with a dispensary scheme in 1876
  • AFC Bournemouth, originally Boscombe FC in 1899, reached Premier League status in 2015
  • J.P. Morgan, which arrived in 1986, now employs thousands in the town
  • Nationwide, formerly Portman Building Society, maintains a major presence with 700 staff based locally
