Antony Batty & Company Employee Focus: Sunney Sagoo

Sunney is a Senior Insolvency Administrator at our Brentwood Office.

This month we are shining the spotlight on one of our Senior Insolvency Administrators, Sunney Sagoo, who is based at our Brentwood office. Sunney works closely alongside our Licensed Insolvency Practitioners and focuses mainly on Members Voluntary Liquidations and Creditors Voluntary Liquidations.

We asked Sunney to answer some questions, including what got him into the Insolvency profession, what he particularly enjoys about Insolvency, and of course we also asked him what he enjoys in his spare time away from Insolvency.

1. What do you enjoy about insolvency? What got you into the profession?

“I was studying for my degree (BSc in Accounting and Business Management) at Westminster University and found a boutique accountancy and insolvency practice located in St Johns Wood (near to Lord’s Cricket ground) to gain some work experience whilst studying. I wanted to get an insight into the accountancy world as my goal at the time was to become an accountant. During my time in the practice, the 2008 credit crunch recession hit, which led to many insolvencies. This was my first experience of working in insolvency and I have never looked back.

There is no typical day in insolvency, and I enjoy helping stakeholders, employees, and creditors through the various insolvency procedures. At ABc, I currently manage predominately solvent liquidations which is most satisfying in helping stakeholders realise their investments/funds in a tax efficient way. I am happy to say that I have received several testimonials and Google reviews from satisfied clients.”#

2. Past career and experience? Interesting cases you dealt with?

“After my degree, I worked in a boutique practice situated in Loughton, Essex,  for over 4 years where I obtained my Certificate for Proficiency in Insolvency qualification and learned about the various insolvency procedures.

I then moved on to several other insolvency firms in London, which finally led me to ABc! I have now been at ABc for over 5 years (crazy, no idea where the time has gone).

An interesting MVL case at ABc: the company’s founders had sadly passed away, which resulted in a bitter feud between two families as they held equal shares. An agreement had to be made which meant patience and communication was key to sort out their differences and come to an arrangement as to how the company’s assets, which included two properties, were going to be split. A Section 110 reconstruction and solvent liquidation (MVL) was agreed that involved splitting the two properties. I obtained invaluable first-hand experience of this process from Stephen Evans, a former partner and Licensed Insolvency Practitioner at ABc, who having recently retired, has stayed on as a consultant.

I have now worked in insolvency for over 12 years and am looking to develop my career to the next level by obtaining my JIEB qualification, and one day to become an insolvency practitioner.”

3. Interesting facts about yourself, Hobbies, interests

“I attend spin classes in the gym and play badminton with my family at weekends. I also have a passion for Cricket and enjoy watching all the various formats, from 5-day Test matches to the T20 games.

I enjoy going on holiday to different locations and experiencing new cultures. For a recent holiday, I visited Dubai with my siblings being the first holiday with them after 25 years since we were kids. My parents owned (and worked long hours) in a newsagent which meant we were not able to travel much together at the same time.

I am father of two toddlers which I enjoy most of the time but with them being little ladies I tend to find myself outnumbered!! Their current favourite show at the moment, is ‘Baby Shark’ which is always being played in my household, but as a former Disney fan I am trying my best to show them the classics. There are so many to list but a few that I enjoyed when I was growing up include: Beauty and Beast, Sword in Stone, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Aladdin.”
